Takayama Jinya was the administrative center of Hida after it became a direct territory of the shogunate during the Edo period, and of the more than 60 district magistrate and magistrate offices that were said to have existed throughout the country at the end of the Edo period, Takayama Jinya is the only one whose original building remains. It was designated a national historic site in 1929.
