Abe AkihiroNice to meet you, I'm Abe from CIC.
Recently, when I walk around town, I feel like I've seen more and more advertisements for events using VR goggles.
The terms metaverse and digital twin have been appearing more and more in the news, but when reading online articles, the two terms are often used interchangeably, so I became curious about the difference between them and did some research.
The metaverse is a virtual space designed to enable people to communicate; it does not necessarily have to be linked to real life; people can interact with each other through avatars.
Example of use: Events for famous artists held in online games, etc.
On the other hand, digital twins aim to perform advanced simulations that are difficult to achieve in reality, and create a virtual space that is linked to the real world by reproducing data such as drawings obtained in the real world in a virtual space.
Example of use: Remote management of a manufacturer's factory located far away, etc.
Both the metaverse and digital twin are technologies that utilize virtual space, but the metaverse is structured around digital twins that recreate real-world spaces, and there seem to be two differences between them: the content of the virtual space and the purpose of creating that space.
It seems that recent events that combine real spaces are increasingly offering experiences that do not involve avatars, instead utilizing digital twins.
The benefits of utilizing virtual space seem to be that it allows you to experience things that you cannot experience in reality in a virtual space that is closer to reality, and that the experience can be designed as an extension of reality with less of a discrepancy between the image and real space.
I also felt that one of the benefits of making the virtual space public is that it can hopefully pique the interest of people who have not had any contact with us before.
However, when considering combining it with real space, it seems necessary to pay attention to how the VR experience is introduced and how the real space and virtual space are linked, as making the content cheap can dampen the excitement for the event and it also takes some time to put on the VR goggles.
I think that events using VR goggles will continue to increase, so through this experience I would like to think about effective ways to use them in combination with real spaces.
