Shigeo Nagao

Nice to meet you, I'm Nagao, a member of the Technical Direction Department at Osaka CIC.

Recently, while on a family trip, we visited a small amusement park.
The amusement park had a Showa-era atmosphere, which made me feel nostalgic and reminded me of my childhood.

The voice of a stranger connected to somewhere...

What made the biggest impression on me was the optical illusion exhibit.
I was once again captivated by these mysterious paintings, which take advantage of optical illusions to appear three-dimensional or completely different depending on the angle from which they are viewed.

The ball that keeps rolling forever

When I was a child, I simply enjoyed the mystery of it without thinking about it, but now that I'm an adult, I find myself enjoying the strange sensation of "my brain understands it, but when I rely on my vision, I get the illusion," without being able to fully understand it.

When we research optical illusions, we find that they are studied in various fields, including psychology and neuroscience, and that there are many different types of illusions.

If you look through the hole, you'll see a horse running.

Much of the content is a little difficult, but if you're interested, please do your own research.

There are many exhibits that make use of optical illusions, but one of the oldest techniques is called "Fantaview" (also known by various names such as "Magic Vision" or "Pepper's Ghost"), which was also a topic of discussion during a previous World Expo project I was in charge of.

A ghost (phantom image) appears on stage

This technique, which uses the reflection of mirrors to project virtual images into space, is extremely effective when combined with a sculpture. It is still used in facilities decades after its creation, and its appeal has not diminished.

Even with such a classic technique, I feel that it is possible to create a very attractive presentation depending on the idea.
Technology is evolving rapidly every day, but we would like to continue incorporating performances that will leave a lasting impression on people by allowing them to not only "see" but also "experience the illusion."
